Introduction The lesson, solving equations, particularly linear equations, was chosen to provide students with the opportunities to see Algebra being applied in solving real world problems. The lesson connects with students through their own experiences. Students can then see Algebra in action. Too often, students will question their math teachers as to why they are taking Algebra. The lesson also provides math teachers the opportunities to show their students the importance of taking Algebra and to put to rest forever the nagging question as to why they should take Algebra. The lesson engages the students as it relates mathematics to the real- world experiences of young people. After the lesson, students can confidently formulate linear equations given real- life situations and make predictions about future events. After all, what good is an education if one cannot apply himself or herself in helping to solve the problems of the world. Teaching math to young people has always been my passion. It is an unquestionable fact that education is a gift. It is therefore incumbent upon all of us who have an education to pass on the gift to those who are coming after us. Making a difference in the lives of young people is the most important contribution one can make to society. This is what drives me everyday to get up every morning and enter my classroom with zeal and enthusiasm.
